What is a 10x10 kitchen?

I have been asked this question countless times; what is a 10x10 kitchen?  The short answer is that it is an "L" shaped kitchen that is 10' x 10' and is used as the industry standard to tell you how much cabinets would cost to fill a kitchen that is 10'x10'.

10'x10' kitchens rarely exist in real life so don't worry if your kitchen is a little different, you can still estimate what it would cost using these 10'x10' prices.

A 10x10 kitchen is the standard unit of measure that the kitchen industry has decided to use in order to have a common pricing structure to compare “apples to apples”.  That doesn’t necessarily mean that a cabinet company will use this method when advertising their prices, however.

What is "linear foot price" and how does it correlate with the 10'x10' price?

So how do you know if a particular company who is advertising “10x10 pricing” is using the industry standard or just making it up?

A 10x10 kitchen contains 12 particular sized cabinets, without substitution.  What this means is that there are 12 cabinets that make up a 10’x10’ kitchen space and the same 12, no matter what.  Some companies try to use a configuration that is not realistic so that they can only offer 11 cabinets in that same space, thus making their 10’x10’ price less than their competition.  If you come across a company like that, you should probably go somewhere else before you waste your time because it’s already obvious that the company is less than honest.

So what are the 12 cabinets that make up a true 10’x10’ kitchen?

If you look on our “Design Services” page, it has a 10x10 portfolio at the bottom.  You can click one of the right side corners to open the portfolio and see, but I’ll list them here for your convenience:

1 – W3630 (36” wide by 30” tall wall cabinet)
1 – W2430 (24” wide by 30” tall wall cabinet)
1 – CW2430 (24” wide by 30” tall corner wall cabinet)
1 – W1230 (12” wide by 30” tall wall cabinet)
1 – W3012 (30” wide by 12” tall wall cabinet)
1 – W1830 (18” wide by 30” tall wall cabinet)
1 – W3612 (36” wide by 12” tall wall cabinet)
2 – B12 (12” wide base cabinets)
1 – SB36 (36” wide sink base cabinet)
1 – LS36 (36” wide corner lazy susan cabinet)
1 – B18 (18” wide base cabinet)

OK, so now that you know all of the cabinets included in a 10’x10’ kitchen, what does all this mean?

It’s simply a way to distinguish the price variations of the different types of cabinet colors and styles in order for you to be able to find RTA cabinets you like without going over your budget.

The best way to know exactly what your new kitchen will cost is to have a professional design done.  We provide that service for free; just visit the “Design Services” section to begin.

Once you have received the design and quote, you will then have a better idea of how the 10x10 pricing works.  Let’s say, for instance, that your kitchen is slightly different than the typical 10x10 and after receiving a design and quote from us, the price of your kitchen in the Mahogany Maple line is $3300.  Let’s say that’s a little more than you wanted to spend.

This is where the 10x10 price really works well.

We know that the Mahogany Maple 10x10 price is $2217 and we also know there are 12 cabinets that make up that price, so we simply divide $2217 by 12 to get an average cabinet price of $184.75.

So now we know that the average cabinet in Mahogany Maple is $184.75.  Let’s see what the average price in a less expensive cabinet like the York Chocolate.  It’s 10x10 price is $1905.  Divide that by 12 and we end up with $158.75 average price per cabinet.

In your quote, let’s say that there were 18 cabinets and you can check to see how accurate the 10x10 pricing is by multiplying 18 x $184.75 (average price of Mahogany Maple that was quoted).  You should have come up with $3325.50.  Pretty close.

To find out what your same kitchen would cost, roughly, using the less expensive York Chocolate, we take the same number of cabinets, 18, and multiply them by $158.75 (the average price of the York Chocolate cabinets) to get $2857.50.

A $468 difference on a real life scenario.

By using this method, you can quickly estimate the cost of your kitchen without having to go through and actually put all of the cabinets into the shopping cart.  It's not 100% accurate, but it will give you a rough idea of what your new kitchen will cost.

To get an exact amount, you will need to get an accurate quote done for your kitchen.

I hope this helps clarify why we use the 10x10 pricing and what it means.  Remember, when dealing with a cabinet company who advertises their 10x10 pricing, ask what is included in that price.  If it’s not the 12 cabinets listed above, you may want to find someone a little more honest before giving them your hard earned money.
