Out With the Old, In With the New: The Top Signs You Need New Kitchen Cabinets

There are lots of elements that factor into a kitchen remodel. A kitchen renovation costs anywhere from $12,000 to $33,000 with the average cost of about $22,000

Sometimes you don't need a total renovation. Kitchen cabinets are a major part of our kitchens. If you're looking for an upgraded look, changing the cabinets may be all you need.

Is it time to invest in new kitchen cabinets? How can you tell?

Read on to learn the top signs you need new kitchen cabinets.

Outdated Cabinets

One of the biggest reasons people replace their kitchen cabinets is out-of-style cabinetry.

Are your kitchen cabinets more than 15 years old? If so, then they're probably outdated. That's not a problem if you like them. But what if you need to sell your home?

Sometimes an unexpected job opportunity presents itself. But that often means moving to a new city. If you have to sell your home in a hurry, will it sell well for a good price?

The kitchen consistently rates in the top three of the most important rooms in the house for potential buyers. If your kitchen is old and outdated, it impacts your ability to sell quickly for a good price.

Buyers focus on the cost of upgrading when they're looking at homes. An outdated kitchen is often a dealbreaker.

Even if you don't have to sell, wouldn't you rather live with an updated kitchen?

Poor Quality Kitchen Cabinetry

Let's face it, builders don't use high-end cabinets and appliances unless you pay a premium. Most people stick with builder-grade cabinets to keep costs down when building a new home.

Inferior quality wood softens over time. When you push against the walls of the cabinets are they soft? Do you see the cabinets move?

That's not a good sign. The cabinets could fall off the wall from structural deficiencies!

If the cabinets are poor quality, it's time to replace them.

Cabinet Damage

Between heat, steam, and water, the kitchen takes a lot of abuse. How often are your hands wet from the sink when you reach into the cabinets?

Do you unload the dishes from the dishwasher straight into the cabinets? There's likely some water damage where you set damp glasses and plates. Over the years, water takes a toll on the shelving inside the cabinets.

Another common kitchen cabinet issue is mold. Cooking and cleaning create a constant water situation.

Are the undersides of the cabinets near the stove, sink, and dishwasher soft or moldy? That's a definite sign you need new kitchen cabinets.

Another sign is peeling finish on the front of the cabinets. Over time, the finish delaminates from regular wear and tear. If you see bulges, warped areas, or changes in color, it's time for new cabinets.

All cabinets wear down over time from heat and humidity.

Functionality and Capacity

Some kitchens aren't designed well from the start. Do you find yourself frustrated by the functionality or capacity of the cabinets? If so, consider redesigning the kitchen.

That usually requires stripping the kitchen down to the studs. But if you're ready for a total reno, this is your chance for the cabinets of your dreams!

Many kitchens aren't designed with capacity and function in mind. Sometimes cabinets are short with lots of hard-to-use space on top of the cabinets near the ceiling.

Storing kitchenware on top of the cabinets means you have to wash it before you use it!

That's a sure sign you need new cabinets. Invest in cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling for extra enclosed storage.

It's sometimes possible to add additional cabinet space when redesigning the kitchen area. Consult a designer for help.

New Appliances

Don't lie, you were kind of excited when your fridge broke. It was old and ugly. You weren't thrilled with the expense, but you ran out and bought a gorgeous new fridge.

The delivery people came and went to slide the new fridge into the old spot, but it didn't fit. It wasn't off by much, but the cabinets need cutting.

The same thing happens with built-in ovens. Modern refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers come in a plethora of sizes.

If your kitchen cabinetry is old, it's not uncommon that new appliances won't fit. Even if you measured and got about the same size, sometimes the fit isn't right.

This is a great time to update your kitchen cabinets. Instead of paying hundreds of dollars on resizing the cabinets, upgrade to new ones.

Something Smells Bad

Do you smell something bad every time you open a cabinet door? Sometimes smells get in and you can't get them out. That's especially true for older cabinetry.

If the cabinets are more than 10 years old, and you've tried everything to eliminate the odor without success, it's time for new cabinets.

Types of Kitchen Cabinets

Modern ready-to-assemble cabinets are sturdier with strong, long-lasting finishes. There are even some finishes, such as Thermofoil, that stand up well to humidity.

Before you choose your cabinets, research the different types of available finishes. You can even get a metallic paint finish that looks like metal!

Consult a designer about your needs. If you cook a lot and have tons of heavy kitchenware, you'll need tough cabinets.

Time for New Kitchen Cabinets!

Is it time for new kitchen cabinets? Bad smells, poor quality, and damaged cabinets are all good reasons for replacing the kitchen cabinets.

If you're looking for better functionality and capacity those are other good reasons for replacing the cabinets.

Outdated styles are some of the most common reasons for updating.

Always consider resale value when thinking about a kitchen renovation. Even if you're not selling soon, things happen. You don't want to get caught with an old ugly kitchen if you're selling in a pinch.
