How to Assemble a Wall Cabinet - In 5 Easy Steps

Wall cabinets are the bread and butter of kitchen cabinets. Often times, they are the place where you store your plates, bowls, spices, and a variety of other things that are likely to be used each and every time you cook. They are not only one of the most common cabinets in the kitchen, but also the fastest to assemble when building your ready-to-assemble cabinets. To get started, you will have to have a few tools on hand. These include, but are not limited to, a mallet, box cutter, screwdriver, and some glue. Be sure to save your box and use it on your worksurface to protect your cabinets from scratches or any other damage.

Assembling the Cabinet Box

To get started, place your face frame face down on your work surface and run a bead of glue down each of the vertical dado joints. Then, attach two brackets to each side of the cabinets where the pre-drilled holes are located. After your glue and brackets are in place, you may set the side panels into the dado and attach them to the brackets using screws. Do this for both of the side panels. Once your side panels are firmly in place, slide the top and bottom panels into the dados at the bottom of the side panels.

Installing the Back Panel

Installing the back panel is simple. The back panel has two rabbit joints, one on each of the long sides. Slide the protruding end of the joint into the dados on the back side of the side panels, making sure that the back panel sits flush. Once in place, attach three brackets at the top and bottom of the cabinet to lock all of the panels together. The holes for the brackets are pre-drilled to indicated where they go. For one additional measure of stability, secure the back panel to the top and bottom panels by adding screws at the pre-drilled locations running along the width of the cabinet.

Installing the Shelves

Set your cabinet upright, as if it were being placed on the wall. This will allow you to begin installing your shelves. Insert the shelf clips into the peg holes where you desire your shelves to rest and then simply lay the shelves on top of the clips.

Installing the Door

Drop your hinges into the holes cut on the door, inserting the cup side into the door. Screw the hinges into the door using the provided flat Phillip’s head screws. Locate the pre-drilled holes on the face frame of your cabinet and attach the other end of the hinges to the face frame using the round Phillip’s head screws.

Final Touches

Your box is assembled, your shelves are in place, and your doors are mounted, all that is left is adding your hardware. Feel free to attach your hardware at any point in the process, as it won’t hinder your ability to assemble your cabinets. We recommend attaching your hardware to all of your doors before installing your cabinets to save you the effort that would otherwise be spent installing hardware once your cabinets are on the walls.
